  • 2011 WFMU Record Fair Weekend

This past weekend was the 2011 WFMU record fair, and I made 2011 the first year in which I participated in the event. And by “participated,” I mean went. It started with a bus trip down to NYC to visit my brother, Dom.

Stare at this long enough and a secret message will appear…

When I got off the bus, Dom and I made a quick trip to Eataly, just blocks away from the sewer in which the Megabus drops you off.

We picked up groceries to make a great breakfast the next morning.

After Eataly, we went to a Mexican restaurant on the Upper West Side called Noche Mexicana.

I got the sampler platter. Was pretty good.

The next morning, We cooked up breakfast. Semolina and multigrain toast with imported sweet cream butter, cured bacon, and scrambled eggs.

You are now jealous, as you should be…

Then it was time to get ready to head over the the Record Fair.

When we got there, at 12:30pm on Saturday, it was already swarmed with people.

We took a walk around, looked at some records, then decided to hang by the swag table and wait for Gorfman.

We took another walk around, and decided to sneak away for some lunch. We went to a place called Eisenburg’s because Gorfman insisted on eating somewhere that had John Hodgman’s picture hanging on the wall.

    We ate light…
    yeah…yeah right

We went back to the record fair to meet some people we knew were going to be at the record fair. Such as…

The Legendary associate producer Mike from The Best Show on WFMU

The talented actress, photographer, and LA Review of Books editor, Lisa Jane Persky

I also got to shake Tom Scharpling’s hand and watch him ride a swing on a merry-go-round. With Lisa, who was one of the most kind and wonderful people I have ever met, was Andy Zax, music historian, who you will remember steered me in the right direction of forming the complete Beatles works as they would have intended me to own them.

AP Mike was a riot. There was a band playing for a live performance on DJ Terre T’s radio program. Let’s just say it wasn’t Mike’s favorite.

I met some other Friends of Tom, DanEastman, JustSheano and Scratchbomb, TheSpoony, AuntieChristina, and Kiemzi [twitter handles and real human beings just like you and me]. Everyone I met was awesome. Most of these guys were working, so we didn’t get to chat for long, but it was nice meeting everyone. I also may have seen Spike.

Dom and I spun the WFMU Wheel-O-Fate! We won prizes!!!

After we got everything we were gonna get, we headed back to Dom’s place. We took the tally of what we all got.

    Dom's Record Fair Bounty
    derryX's record fair bounty
    Gorfman's record fair bounty…WTF???

We all made some pretty stunning finds, but, as you can see, Gorfman did the best. He paid money for a bootleg copy of a Ghostbusters fan film (that is being distributed for free). We actually watched the whole 86 minutes of the movie, and it was awesomeful.

After the movie, we ordered Chinese food from Dom’s computer, who delivered the food fairly quickly.

Shrimp toast and Schezwan style dumplings

The next morning, Dom, Amanda, and I ate at a diner.

    Corned beef hash, eggs, pancakes

Then I rode off into the sunset.

It was a pretty awesome weekend.

Ohh yeah, it also decided to snow on Saturday, and that hindered the epic derryX-Wally Wackiman meetup that was supposed to happen. That was a little upsetting, but there was so much packed into the weekend that putting that particular meetup off may have been a good thing. Now, it’s going to be even more AMAZING!

  • Listen to My Exit on WEXT

Listen to My Exit on WEXT

    Listen up, folks. Literally.

This evening, you will have the rare opportunity to hear one solid hour of music programmed by yours truly. WEXT (exit977.org) is a local listener-supported radio station that has a weekly hour of programming performed by people outside of radio called My Exit. Anybody can submit the form to participate.

I had a few fun ideas of what I would do with my musical selections on the program, and I was recently contacted to create a playlist and record some blurbs about my selections for the show (I did ask first). That show airs this evening at 8PM. Within the immediate capital region of NY, you can listen on your FM dial at 97.7, or it is available worldwide streaming live at the WEXT website (follow the links at the top to “Listen live”). [There is also an iPhone app to listen live that you can download from the website]

Some basic information about me and three of the songs I picked can be read over at All Over Albany.

I decided to have a little additional fun with those of you who read, interact, and are planning to listen.

First, study the following image, which is a copy of the playlist that I submitted for My Exit.

You’ll notice I’ve blacked out all of the song information except for the genre and year. Yeah, this is ridiculous. I can assure you that underneath the black bars, there is something for everybody, but you’re gonna have to listen to find out. Here’s a quick tidbit about each song that I picked, in numerical order:

    1. If you listened to rock and roll in in the late 60s or if you were a wrestling fan in the late 90s, you’ll love my intro.
    2. A great song, great words to live by, and LOST – Desmond.
    3. This song has been covered a million times, this time by Adele.
    4. Now the party is really starting.
    5. Gotta have something by The Police in there.
    6. This song is how I live my life.
    7. This song is how I feel about doing this blog.
    8. Read an extended blurb about “Tears in the Rain” by Joe Satriani on AOA.
    9. Because I was a mean kid, my brother thinks this song was written about him.
    10. A little slow alternative never killed anybody.
    11. I don’t like ska, but I like this band and this song.
    12. Read an extended blurb about Brian G, Plan 10, and “Amanda’s Box” on AOA.
    13. While there’s a lot of underlying boring politics in this song, it’s a catchy tune and probably one of my favorites by this band (at least later career).
    14. Another LOST reference? We have to go back…there.
    15. Read an extended blurb about “Jesus Fever” by Kurt Vile on AOA.
    16. I don’t necessarily love this band, but this song is solid. And it’s current.
    17. If you’ve known me for the last two years, you know something from this album had to be here.

So…I’d love to hear your guesses for what the songs are.

Here’s what we’re going to do: tune in to My Exit this evening at 8 PM, either by streaming online or on the radio. I will be hosting a live virtual listening party. I’ll be watching twitter and facebook, posting live updates with additional comments about the songs I picked and answering your questions about the set.

Again, folks, listen live this evening, 8PM eastern (5pm pacific) worldwide at Exit977.org. We’re gonna have a good time!

[WEXT is a listener-supported station, so, if you like what you hear, tune in for more original programming and donate.]

  • derryX gets on the AOA Pizza Panel

derryX gets on the AOA Pizza Panel

    Look familiar?

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you’ve heard me mention my friends over at AllOverAlbany.com many times. For the past few years, they’ve been putting together an annual Capital Region Tournament of Pizza to highlight the better slices among the sea of pizzerias that exist in the immediate area.

I’ve offered my services to serve on the panel for a while now. I am happy to report that I was approached to do so this year, for their 2011 Tournament of Pizza. I am extremely excited!

I don’t really want to take away from anything that All Over Albany is going to say about the tournament and my participation, but I’d like to offer up some insight that justifies their choice to add me to their panel (not that I really have to, but it’s fun information).

    • Readers of derryX.com know that I have a no-sugar-coating policy when it comes to my views on food or anything for that matter. I know what I like and dislike, and I’m going to say exactly what I think about it no matter what. I’ve seen good; I’ve seen great; I’ve seen horrendous.
    • Moving this thought to pizza, having lived in this area for over 15 years and coming from a childhood in Brooklyn, NY and adolescence working in an Italian Specialty store in Middletown, NY, a short distance from Brooklyn, I’ve eaten a wide range of qualities of pizza. I’ve had great and bad in NYC. I’ve had mediocre and bad in the Capital Region since moving here. In fact, this low range of quality has kept me loyal to the closest places to my domiciles. This leads into the next point.
    • I’ve never had pizza from most of the All Over Albany 2011 Tournament of Pizza contenders. So, even with the mandatory blind tasting, I wouldn’t be able to identify a pizza.
    • I’m familiar with 1/2 of the judging panel. Albany Jane and Daniel B. are two friends who also share a deep appreciation for food. I know from the start that we agree on many things. We also disagree on many things and are not afraid to voice our opinions with one another. They’ve both been on the judging panel in previous years.
    • I understand the food that I am judging. Look, it’s pizza. There’s nothing really magic about it. Crust, sauce, cheese, maybe toppings. Narrowed down further, most places get the same tomato product and spice it up their own way; some don’t even do that. There aren’t too many cheese brands out there. Crust is crust. There are little touches and different styles that can make a slice memorable. Some places add red pepper to the sauce. Some places sprinkle with romano cheese after the bake. Some places cook their pizzas on screens. All of these types of things add variety to the simple dish. I am usually good at picking these out and appreciating the work that goes into making the standard pie.
    • I know my science. Having experience with food and with science, I can offer insights that could help the panel understand exactly what’s going on with the food they’re eating. Perhaps the pepperoni from one place curls more than another. Or maybe the cheese has strange morphology. I am good at explaining things like this in real scientific terms, like the Zeroth law of thermodynamics, which, oddly enough, I didn’t make up.
    • I refuse to taste pizza without the perfect beverage. And I’ll go out of my way to make sure this beverage is with me.
    • I have fun.

That last one alone should have been enough.

So this should be an interesting relationship. I’m curious to see how I interpret the pizza that made it into the tournament.

Follow the All Over Albany Tournament of Pizza 2011 for more.

    You won’t be sorry.

  • September 26, 2011 – New beginnings…

    September 26, 2011 – New beginnings…

I’m not going anywhere just yet.

Believe me, when I do, it’s just gonna happen. No sappy goodbyes; no teases; no stunts. Immediate change to black. Just like The Sopranos.

I’m finally working my way through a backlog of posts that have been started and never finished. Past that, I have lots of fun ideas for some things to spice up the way you read the posts here.

The first thing I’m doing, which should happen later this week, is unveiling a new feature called “Visions of Songs.” Not to leave it shrouded in mystery, but it’s something that’s been bouncing around my head for a few years now that I’m finally putting down to paper. If you listen to music and/or watch movies, it’s for you.

Another thing is phase 4 of Operation: nWo. As you well know, I’m still pushing through the fitness goals for 2011, and even though I met my goal for the year 3 months ago, things are still changing every day. The thing of it is that fitness is ongoing. Once you’re “fit,” you’re not done. You need to change your habits and goals in order to maintain or evolve. That’s what’s happening here. Evolution. With the move into the 4th quarter of Operation:nWo, I’m making some dietary adjustments to shed some more weight while putting on muscle. The plan is to continue the 4-5 day/week workout routine, but step it up a little, and continue to eat as I am eating. I will insert a post workout protein shake into my diet, and my “second dinner” which consists of 3 oz of mozzarella and 3 oz of hot sorpresatta is being replaced with 6 oz of grilled chicken. These two tweaks should move me into a good position by the end of the year, and I have something big planned for then. For the blog, don’t be surprised if you see me post a few protein shake recipes, as I now have significant readership from fitness sources, and it is going to be good derryX style info for the hardcore reader.

The third thing is related to this. I’m starting another new feature called “Eat Like derryX,” where I give recipes for meals that I eat. I haven’t decided whether it is just going to be fit meals, or whether to include the more indulgent things I sometimes make, but I just got finished eating the first thing I tried creating for this feature, and man was it awesome. It’s going to take me some time to do the dish justice, and the post for this will probably coincide with a big personal announcement and achievement that will be unleashed to you in a couple weeks, but the wait will be worth it. [You may be asking yourself, “doesn’t derryX already do recipes?” Yea, I do, but these will be a little more elaborate and give more information to recreate what I did. More. More. More. That’s what you want, right?]

So anyway, stay tuned, keep the emails and comments coming. Better yet, lets be friends on facebook if we’re not. I’ll be divulging some details (pictures, updates, etc) of what I’m talking about there. You can also find me on twitter and Google+, but the meat of it is going to happen on facebook.

  • derryX Dines: Chipotle – Albany, NY

derryX Dines: Chipotle – Albany, NY

Very few menus are geared toward meeting the dietary needs of anyone who can walk in the doors. Chipotle is a national chain that manages to be accessible to people from all walks of life, following whichever diet they choose. There are a few locations in the capital region of NY. I recently visited the location in Stuyvesant Plaza in Albany, NY.

As I was walking up to the door, someone was being walked out of the restaurant like when a fighter is injured in the ring and the officials put their arms around the athlete to walk them to the back. Ok…

I was waiting for Cassie to arrive, so I stood outside of the store and tried to figure out what was going on and at least 3 people tried to open the doors to Chipotle and looked at me when they couldn’t pull them open. Truth be told, the left door was locked, and the right one was so difficult to move, I felt like I was getting a killer lat workout when I went to open it.

I actually regularly dine at Chipotle. There are many things I like about it; there are many things I dislike about it. I stick to what I like when I go there, and, when I’m working out and following my high protein diet, I go with the burrito bowl, which is described as “Served in a bowl, choice of cilantro-lime rice, pinto or vegetarian black beans, meat (braised carnitas or barbacoa, adobo-marinated and grilled chicken or steak) or guacamole, salsa and cheese or sour cream.”

If you’ve ever ordered at Chipotle, you know it’s a high stress situation. The people working there are always one step ahead of you and almost never listen to what you say. On this trip, I got up to the counter and told the guy, “Burrito bowl, black beans, no rice, double chicken,” and, of course, the guy had already mock scooped a spoonful of rice into the bowl the second I said “bowl.” Once he was done dispensing the chicken, his hand was already on a spoon for mild salsa as he said, “Salsa – mild, medium, hot, or corn.” If I was not quick enough to blurt out, “hot and corn,” I would have to eat their chunky, bland mild salsa on my burrito bowl; so I did, and crisis was averted.

I always get sour cream and cheese, and always say, “add guacamole.” As these words were coming out of my mouth, the guy said, “guacamole is $1.79 extra, is this ok?” and before he could say the first “is,” I yelled, “YESSSSSS!!” I got a diet soda, paid my $10 and change and went to sit down facing the front door.

Those people really need to slow down.

As I destroyed my burrito bowl, I laughed as other people had trouble with the door. C’mon, why did one door need to be locked? Why do places to this? Also, why is the door that is open so darn heavy? I don’t get it.

I like how each bite is unique. Most bites of my burrito bowl consist of some of everything, but sometimes it’s just corn and beans, sometimes it’s guacamole and cheese, you know, variety. What I like about this, besides it being exactly how I like to eat while I’m training, is that the flavors of everything are clean. The chicken is seasoned with earthy spices which creates a great base for the dish. The black beans are relatively unseasoned, but, coupled with the salsas and sour cream, it helps to bring the flavors and textures together. I’m not exactly sure where they’re getting their sour cream, since it’s way thinner than any sour cream you will purchase in a market, but it tastes pretty good. Their cheese is akin to a mild cheese like a mozzarella.

Even if I weren’t training, I would probably still order the same thing. I used to get burritos, but their rice is terrible. They add cilantro and some other stuff to it, rendering it inedible. Their chips are also a sad excuse. They come from a box and are given to you in a paper bag; they’re sprayed with a lime salt that takes them from bad to putrid. They also charge a significant amount extra for salsa, mediocre at best salsa.

And that’s why I stick with what I like.

    MORE derryX Dines!!!!!

  • Don’t Exit through the Enter door

Don’t Exit through the Enter door

I have no patience for Home Depot. It’s a store that conveniently gathers everything you would need for a home improvement project arranged in such a way that is both contrary to intuition and sarcastically obvious. It’s a store that I avoid like cauliflower. Ok, maybe not that much, but I avoid it.

On a recent visit, I think for a trip for some paint for the new place, we went to Home Depot. For some reason, Cassie had to run back out to her car to get something. She walked all the way to the Exit doors and all the way back to her car, parked by the Enter doors, and then came back in the Enter door.

All the while, I was having a conversation with some employees stationed at the front of the store about this sequence of events.

I asked the young kid, “did she really have to go out the Exit door?”

He responded, “no, but it is preferred.”

I prodded for a clarification, but didn’t get one.

Can I know, if it’s not required to go out the exit door, why do they have designated entrances and exits? They have people standing at the front of both. It’s not like people are going to sneak out with stuff when there are people there watching the door. Just let people go in and out through either door.

It seems silly to me, but my interests aren’t aligned with theirs in the least. As a matter of fact, the best part about that place to me is the exit. Actually, I like the paint mixing apparatus. That thing is cool.

  • Send Darth a t-shirt, win stuff…

    Send Darth a t-shirt, win stuff…

My buddy, Darth, needs our help.

Ok, his real name isn’t Darth, but that’s the name that I call him. His name is Keith. and he recently underwent gastric bypass surgery after some pretty crazy health scares.

Actually, let me give you a little history.

This is a guy I met back in 2005. We actually met through mutual acquaintances at a get together organized through myspace. Yea, myspace, remember that thing? The meetup occurred at a place called Hawaii Fountain in Middletown, NY, my hometown. Hawaii Fountain, abbreviated HF among regulars, used to be the spot to hang out Saturday nights. They were open late, weren’t filled with Middletown trash, served pretty awesome Chinese food, had the worst staff in the history of restaurants, and had BLT’s on the menu. Yes, actual bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches. And they were pretty freaking awesome.

Here’s Darth biting into one of their signature BLTs:

The night of the meetup, we didn’t really know how to react to him. That is, of course, until he decided to outline his plans for a Star Wars pornographic movie. In his plans, he had names for each character, the best of which was a play on Darth Vader with Vader being replaced by a four letter word much like the word, duck.

Darth with a lightsaber at the very first HF get together

From that moment on, I had to be friends with Darth. He has come up to visit me and my brother a number of times in the last few years. Here are some pictures of the good times:

    Darth Squared aka Pissed Cubed
Darth with my Scarlet Witch comic book
Gorfman, Darth, and Me back in 2006
Darth with Dom's nWo Cake from our Wrestlemania 23 party
Darth and Darth at Darth's Wedding

Anyway, Darth needs our help. Even if he didn’t have gastric bypass surgery, I probably would have asked for your help anyway. As you can tell from most of the above images, Darth is keen on the semi-casual button down (sometimes Hawaiian) shirt open over plain t-shirt style. I think the kid needs some t-shirts to mix it up a little. In actuality, he is shrinking by the minute and needs shirts to accommodate his newer, smaller size, Extra Large (XL).

Well, Darth made it interesting for us. He created a contest to get t-shirts and is giving away real prizes. The details are here.

I have some plans for what I’m sending him. You know it’s going to be legendary. However, I wanted you to have a chance to enter the contest, send something in, and potentially win something. The odds are pretty good right now, and I think some of the people reading this are creative enough to win this.

If you do decide to participate, leave a comment below so that I can let him know who I sent; also, please kindly respond “yes” to the facebook event.

If you need some ideas more than what he’s been dropping on the event page, maybe this will help…

  • derryX makes corned beef hash…

    derryX makes corned beef hash…

Generally, going out to eat can get expensive. On top of that, you really don’t know how they’re cooking your food or what is even in it.

A favorite breakfast of mine is the corned beef hash and two scrambled eggs at Route 7 Diner in Latham, NY. There are a few things that make this a less than optimal regular breakfast experience. The first is proportions. They say it consists of two scrambled eggs; I don’t know how big the chicken they got these eggs from is, but there seems to be much more than 2 eggs. Another is the quality of the corned beef hash. It’s clearly from a can. While I do enjoy canned corned beef hash, you can do better, especially in the capital region.

I’m here to tell you that you can do even better yet. And it’s really easy. Here’s what I did (some preparation at least a day before assembly is required):

I went to Falvo’s Meat Market and asked for half of a raw, pickled corned beef brisket. I was kind of an idiot for this because I failed to realize that this would not yield as much as I expected. Ohh well; next time, I get the whole brisket. I boiled a pot of water, added the brisket and simmered that sucker for 4 hours, as instructed by the gentleman at Falvo’s. After extraction from the water, I allowed it to cool and placed it in a container in the fridge.

Also ahead of time, I diced up some raw sweet potatoes and boiled these in a copious amount of water. I drained these and allowed them to cool then placed them in a container in the fridge.

On the morning that I wanted to eat corned beef hash, I took a vidallia onion and diced about 1/4 of it. I also diced about 4 oz of corned beef and set aside about 4 oz of sweet potatoes.

I melted about 1/2 tbsp of butter into 1/2 tbsp of olive oil and heated the pan to a good medium-high.

I tossed the onions, corned beef, and sweet potatoes into the hot pan and allowed it to cook without agitation for a few minutes.

(Bonus points if you comment with the reason that I use wooden spoons exclusively with my stainless steel pans)

While this was working, I cracked two eggs into a bowl with 1/2 tbsp of milk and a pinch of kosher salt and some cracked pepper.

I whipped these guys up and, in a separate frying pan, I melted a small pat of butter and scrambled them to light firmness.

While all of this was happening, I mixed the hash a couple of times. When that reached the desired crispiness, I placed it on a plate with a well down the center, and added the eggs to the well.

derryX's Corned Beef Hash with 2 Scrambled Eggs

I like lots of pepper on my eggs, so I cracked some more over the top. I enjoyed this dish so much! Plus, I have little containers with the components in the fridge and can toss them in a pan and have this any time!

I did brush over a major point of controversy, though. Corned beef hash is traditionally made with white potatoes. Yea, I know this. My hash uses sweet potatoes. I have a few reasons for this. The most important two reasons are that I prefer sweet potatoes to white potatoes, and it is my recipe. Also important are the fact that sweet potatoes are lower on the glycemic index than white potatoes, and I have a shirt that I need to continue fitting into. You want white potatoes? Use white potatoes; it’s your life.

  • derryX’s Three Basil Pesto

    derryX’s Three Basil Pesto

A highlight of my summer is getting fresh basil from my parents’ garden. They grow this stuff by the cubic ton.

This year, for Fathers Day, I gave my dad a few plants of Thai basil, which has a faint anise flavor, and purple basil, which tastes like regular green basil. Apparently, they grew like crazy, and he brought me a humongous bucket of those two and regular green basil. I wanted to see what it would be like to make pesto mixing the three.

I started by lightly toasting some pine nuts.

I added some fresh garlic and some olive oil to a blender.

My olive oil of choice this time was Merro Extra Virgin (always extra virgin).

I had a huge amount of basil, the three varieties described above.

Mixture of green and Thai basil
    Purple Basil

I blended the hell out of the basil, adding a few leaves at a time to the oil. When it got too thick, I added a little more oil. Throughout the addition of basil, I adjusted the salt and pepper levels. I was mindful of the consistency of mixture and of the salt content because I still had to add grated cheese, which would thicken it and make it saltier. Once all of the basil was incorporated, and I had a fairly loose mixture. I added grated cheese, a mixture of Parmigianno and Pecorino, but not by blending; I incorporated the cheeses using a spoon for reasons that should be blatantly obvious.

Why do I mix cheeses? Parmigianno is a great cheese, but it’s fairly mild and doesn’t stand up against the strong basil and olive oil on its own. By adding pecorino, which is a more pungent cheese, you get a bit more sharpness, which is what I like, remember, this is being made to my tastes, which is also why there are no proportions throughout this recipe.

I don’t think there was enough Thai basil in there to affect the overall flavor of the pesto. Remember, it’s a whole lot of basil up against garlic, pine nuts, cheese, and olive oil, all of which are pretty strong flavors. The handful of Thai basil leaves, which taste slightly different from standard basil, isn’t gonna shift the flavor that much. The overall color of the pesto was darker than my usual pesto batches; this is totally expected.

When all was said and done, I put the pesto in some of my finest plastic containers.

…and it’s all waiting in the freezer for a suitable application

  • derryX, the person, turns 32

    derryX, the person, turns 32

I had my actual birthday last month, and, man, was it a celebration.

I am a huge fan of either going to Bombers or Wolff’s Biergarten for the free beverage. Since I did the boot at Biergarten two years in a row, I decided to invite some of my closest friends to Bombers Schenectady for a crazy margarita, some good food, and lots of laughs.

But first, I woke up to find this stuff in my brand spanking new apartment:

A special "Happy Birthday" message from Cassie on our chalkboard wall (Easter Egg alert! Find it; win a prize)
A table-full of presents from Cassie

Just to clarify, Cassie got me a year subscription to Men’s Health Magazine, Rough Justice (a book of sketches by Alex Ross), The Beatles in Mono (2009 Remaster, which was on its way), The Big Lebowski Blu Ray (which I can expect mid-August), and a sweet card. It was all awesome stuff.

This set the stage for a pretty awesome day. First, I had to work, though. After work, I got some pretty awesome news about my local comic shop. Ohh, and I also changed my shirt.

    Operation: nWo completed?

I met up with Cassie, and we headed over to Bombers Schenectady.

Some of my closest friends came. Here’s the rundown:

Brian G. with his lovely girlfriend, Melissa
    Nasty Nick
Big Rory, with his mind on his money, and his money on his mind
The group of us (including Cassie)

I didn’t know what to order. I really wanted BBQ tofu fries, and I really wanted the Red Stripe jerk pork plate with no rice, and I really wanted XXX Hot boneless wings. I couldn’t pick two out of the three, so I ordered them all; Rory and Nick payed for most of it, and I’m grateful for that.

    What? I had leftovers.

Bombers BBQ Tofu Fries – AMAZING
Bombers Red Stripe Jerk Pork Plate (no rice) – AMAZING
Bombers XXX Hot Boneless Wings – OK (about as hot as medium anywhere else)

Of course, I took the opportunity to pose with the free birthday margarita.

…and I finished the whole margarita and was contemplating ordering a Colt 45, which the waitress notified us was served in a special bucket. We honestly didn’t even believe they even seriously had it.

    Next time.

We all had a great time. I’m not sure everybody else had the stellar experience with the food that I did, but you can’t ask for everything for everybody. I was just happy to spend the night with my pals. It was nothing less than amazing, and is a time I will remember for a long time to come.

Now that the dust has settled, I’ve gotten a bunch of gifts from a bunch of people.

Thanks to Cassie and a Best Buy gift card labeled “derryX” from Brian and Melissa, I now own the best remasters of all of the Beatles’ studio albums, at least that’s the cursory opinion of fellow Friend of Tom, Andy Zax, renowned music historian and music geek.

My brother, Dom, who moved away last year, sent me some pretty awesome stuff. He got me Bulletstorm for Xbox 360 and a WWE Classic Sycho Sid figure, which replaces Sabu and The Shockmaster as the weirdest figure I own.

Arby’s Enthusiast, Jeff Gorfman, mailed me the first trade paperback of Atomic Robo and a weird note that I loved.

My parents visited for a day around my birthday, and, while they were here, they got me a snazzy new printer and Mortal Kombat/Mortal Kombat Annihilation on DVD (which is actually really bad quality, so it’s going back to the store, and blu rays are on the way).

I got myself some miscelaneous stuff:

All in all, I’d say it was a pretty good birthday.
