Green Eggs and Cold Stone

On the tail of Mockingbird Marathon, a local fundraising event organized partially by Kevin Marshall to honor the 50th anniversary of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird that took place on Saturday, November 6, 2010, I gathered some local luminaries of my own and thought it would also be appropriate to honor the 50th anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham in similar fashion. Inspired by WWE’s dX invasion of WCW at the height of the Monday Night Wars, I set the location to be Cold Stone Creamery, which is conveniently across the plaza from the venue of the Mockingbird Marathon. We gathered around 9PM (the ending time of the Mockingbird Marathon. The time and venue were chosen in hopes that some of the readers from the Mockingbird Marathon would join our reading once that was over, yet not interfere with that event.

Shopping around for a copy of Green Eggs and Ham was interesting. I had no idea that there was a special “Party Edition” that was published for the 50th anniversary, but I am damn sure glad I was able to find it. That would make Andrew W.K. proud. What makes the Party Edition unique is the foil cover and (although unconfirmed) brighter pictures throughout the book.

There was a very small group of people there with me. I kept the invitation list fairly short because I really didn’t anticipate this reading to take very long. My apologies to anyone who I didn’t specifically invite. I did, for other purposes that evening, invite all of the people I consider friends. And I wasn’t going to go around begging for people to participate after only inviting the people I wanted to be there. But I would like to note that the people I invited (even if they didn’t participate) are people who are willing to support my endeavors, the same way I go around supporting other peoples’ endeavors, especially people I consider friends.

As far as the reading goes, once we ordered ice cream, we all sat down at a small round table and passed the book around.

I started things off, nWo style…

Then my new protege, Xprotege took over…

Then, cute~ella read for a bit…

And Cassie also read some pages…

Nobody from the actual Mockingbird Marathon ended up joining our reading. I did very little to actually promote this event, as I didn’t want anyone involved with the Mockingbird Marathon to take actual offense or think I disliked their book or their cause.

Some of the Cold Stone customers thought what we were doing was amazing so they showed some interest in reading. I let them read a page or two, but didn’t take any pictures of them, at their request.

All in all, I’d say this was a successful honoring of Dr. Seuss’s creation, and my favorite childrens’ book of all time.

And if you’re not down with that, I have two words for you…
