Revisited: Hungry Fish Cafe – Troy, NY
I’m a big fan of dining at The Hungry Fish Cafe in Troy. I’ve gone a few times for breakfast and had one of the greatest breakfast dishes I’ve had locally and definitely the best poached eggs around!
I’ve always meant to stop in for lunch some time, and I finally had the opportunity to do so.
Every time I go, the cafe undergoes some minor rearrangements, which keeps things looking fresh.
I was looking to order a salad and a wrap, but the server indicated that they weren’t serving salads since they source everything local.
So I just went ahead and ordered the two dishes I had my eyes on.
The first thing to arrive was the Garlic Rubbed Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($9 – Roasted garlic oil rubbed homemade bread grilled with creamy whole milk American and smoked mozzarella cheeses).
It came with a side of dehydrated apple chips (which were good). Aside from the slightly charred and bitter garlic, this was great. The star is the scratch-made bread, and the mixture of cheeses played nicely with the bread and the toasted garlic flavor.
The wrap I ordered was the Crispy Chipotle Chicken Wrap ($10 – All natural chicken fried to order chicken breast, local field greens, tomatoes, black olives, smoked mozzarella, balsamic vinaigrette and chipotle mayo on a NY wheat wrap; with potato salad or cole slaw).
I tried the cole slaw with this dish (also, very good). The sandwich was excellent. I loved how crispy and juicy the chicken inside was. The contrast of balsamic vinaigrette and chipotle mayo was great, and smoked mozzarella fell right into place with the flavors of everything. The black olives felt a little out of place, but they weren’t plentiful by any means. The flour wrap served to hold everything together and not really mess with the flavors inside. For $10, the portion is just right, considering everything going into it is made from scratch.
Once I was done with my meal, I asked to say hi to Sarah (the owner), and we high fived before I left. Sometimes, you gotta!
