The Fat Lebowski

Until recently, I had gold in my hand, and I didn’t even realize it.

According to amazon.com, I purchased the DVD version of The Big Lebowski back on August 18, 1999. I can’t believe amazon goes back that far! Since I purchased my DVD copy of Trees Lounge the month prior, it looks like that’s the summer that I discovered IFC on cable while living at my parents house for summer break from college. I remember seeing both movies and needing to own them immediately.

I must have watched that copy of The Big Lebowski hundreds of times; I love that movie. When I found out the blu ray, which presents the film in beautiful colors and with awesome sound, was coming out, I had little need for the DVD copy, so I sold it on the amazon marketplace last year to help fund the purchase of the blu ray. I sold it for more than I spent for the blu ray, so I’d say it was financially a great decision; the video on that DVD version stinks pretty hard.

I hope that if you read this blog, you are a fan of the film. If you haven’t seen the film, you should do so immediately. I cannot recommend it enough.

But anyway.

I am currently reading a book written by the people who throw the annual Lebowski-fest, a yearly convention where the superfans (bigger fans than I), or “Achievers,” flock to express their love for the folklore of the film and celebrate the cult classic. In the book they point out a huge error on the back of the original DVD release. Luckily, I reached out to the twitters and facebooks and asked if anybody still had this version. I didn’t have to look far; Metalfrog came through and snapped me a copy using the crappy camera on his dumb cellphone. It’s fine, you can read what you need to.

Here goes:

Clearly, the people who did the cover art for the film didn’t watch the film, because, if they did, they would know that the rug “really tied the room together,” not “made the room ‘hang together.'”

So to celebrate the fact that this blunder exists, let’s come up with our favorite misquotes from the film.

I’ll kick it off!

“Be quiet, Donny.” – Walter

(Don’t forget the quotation marks and the character!)
