Don’t stop me now!

This past Saturday night, I got together with a couple of my good friends, Rory and Nasty Nick, for some karaoke at Muddy’s in Watervliet. Before you say anything, yes, Muddy’s has a topless bartender/waitress; however, despite wanting to, I have never actually seen this person in dozens to trips on Saturday evening for karaoke.

The karaoke service at Muddy’s is run by a guy named Steve of Karaoke Masters (join them on facebook). He has a thick book of the songs that he has available, and I can almost guarantee that just about anything that you’d want to sing is in the book. For example, he has Andrew WK’s “Party Hard” and Paul and Linda McCartney’s “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey,” two songs which are difficult to find at karaoke bars around here.

While drinks and food are a little on the pricey side (this last time, I spent $27 on a malibu and diet coke and 10 wings after tip), they do have a tasty house hot sauce and a reasonable selection of domestic draft beers. The crowd is generally friendly, and I’ve seen the same people there a number of times. In fact, I was invited out this time from Rory via a public facebook event for another of the regulars’ birthday parties. The people were nice and even offered some of the girl’s birthday cake to us.

This past Saturday was super busy, and there was little opportunity to get songs in, so I decided to keep it short and sweet with my song selection. I started with “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” and moved on to “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen.

Fans of The Best Show on WFMU with Tom Scharpling will immediately understand this song choice, but for those of you who are not, first of all, why not? Second of all, since Tom’s show is billed as mirth, music, and mayhem, he has lately been ending the music portion of his show with this song, and it’s a perfect lead in to the remainder of the mirth and mayhem that I witness every week when I listen to the show. It is also his 2011 theme song as well as the name of his DJ premium when you pledge to WFMU during the 2011 marathon

And it’s pronounced “fontasy.”

Wait – there’s only one waitress there that does the whole topless thing? And she doesn’t work Saturdays, apparently? Unusual, but if it works for them…

I’ve seen several different topless waitresses there Jerry, so I don’t know what you’re talking about. The best is when Brian G gets so drunk he starts trying to stuff tips in their panties!

The experts tell me that Muddy’s only has topless waitresses/bartenders on weeknights. Fridays and Saturdays, all of the workers are clothed.

been to Muddy’s once with husband..and the bartender/waitress was wearing pasties I think..husband was embarrassed (I couldn’t care less) so we left. I can’t remember if it was a Sat or Sun afternoon, but it was definitely one or the other.

On every Saturday night that I’ve gone (between 9:30pm and 2am), I have never seen this.

I keep reiterating that point because I don’t want anyone feeling discouraged from considering karaoke there on Saturday nights because it’s a non-issue during that time.

Thanks for the plug, Derry! I remember your performances very well and you rocked the house! Just to clarify- The bartenders are FULLY CLOTHED during karaoke time and switch out an hour before the show starts. A NEW sound system is going to be installed in the next couple of weeks. It would be great if you and the guys came back down and tried out the new system.
