Dark Friday…

I have somehow started a revolution. As a joke, on Thanksgiving Day, I posted the following Facebook Status update:

I’m sorry guys. I don’t do the Dark Friday shopping, and, furthermore, I refuse to be racist and call it Black Friday.

It was mainly in jest, but it ended up being one of the more popular facebook posts I’ve had in a while.

One of the feedback comments from my friend, Anthony, was as follows:

Jerry I agree. … just think of what it sounds like to start off the Christmas Season with Black Friday…

That really got me thinking, “you know what? I have a point.”

Now, I did my research, and I know the most commonly accepted origin of the term “Black Friday” stems from the fact that most retail establishments operate at a loss (or “in the red”) from January through November, until “Black Friday,” the day at which the establishments operate at a net gain (or “in the black”). But there is a part of me that doesn’t trust the people who came up with this term.

I’m also not saying that the term is meant to be politically incorrect. I’m just saying that I’m gonna play it safe and continue ahead calling it “dark Friday” instead of Black Friday, because I know that if anyone is going to get called out for using a potentially politically correct term, it’s gonna be me.

hehehe. as an accountant, i can tell you, that the in the red/black thing really IS true. losses are typically denoted with red ink on spreadsheets while gains are in black. so actually, in this case, it’s better to black. 🙂

I just find it difficult to believe that businesses will operate in the red for 11 months out of the year…especially publically traded businesses that determine guidances and dividends based on quarters…

If “Black Friday” were a racist term, you would hear Al Sharpton, Jesse James, Oprah Winfrey, and Whoopi Goldberg complaining about it. It’s not like it’s “N-word Friday.” Although – I think that would be awesome. The day everyone from the ghetto goes to Wal-Mart to buy $189 laptops and $5 slacks.

What makes you seem most racist is your fear of saying the word “black” in fear it’ll be taken as a racial description rather than a color (or technically lack there of).

What’s next? DarkBerry? Dark Flag? Darkboard? Call of Duty: Dark Ops? Is Lewis Black’s name now Lewis Dark? Oh – don’t forget Dark Sabbath.

You know – i’m going to do the complete opposite and call it “N-word Friday” for now on just to show how stupid the concept of it being racist is.

I actually believe the retailers are not operating at an actual loss so much as not meeting their revenue and profit goals, as forecasted for the year. I don’t KNOW this but it has always been my impression.

I call it Jew Friday, because everyone is a cheap fcuk looking for such a deal. And I can say that, because I’m a cheap Jewish fcuk.
