2011 – Video Game Retrospective

2011 saw a bunch of pretty major video game releases across many platforms, and, looking back, I had a good amount of time to dabble in a lot of them, but I still don’t feel like I played enough games in 2011.

About a year ago, I outlined the games I was currently playing, and the games I haven’t started yet. Here’s a similar update followed with an update of games that I played through in 2011:

In Progress:

  • Super Mario RPG (Wii Virtual Console)
  • New Super Mario Bros. (Wii)
  • Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Nintendo DS)
  • Super Mario All-Stars (Wii)
  • Super Mario Kart (Wii)
  • Punch-out! (Wii)
  • Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (Nintendo DS)
  • Batman: Arkham City (Xbox360) – Main game finished, now completing side quests

The backlog:

  • Assassin’s Creed: Revelations (Xbox360)
  • Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii)
  • Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (Nintendo DS)
  • Suikoden Tierkreis (Nintendo DS)
  • Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (Nintendo DS)
  • Metroid Prime: Trilogy (Wii)
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
  • Suikoden 3 (PS2)

Completed in 2011:

  • Gears of War 3 (Xbox360) – but still playing Hardcore coop with Dom
  • Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (Xbox360)
  • Bulletstorm (Xbox360)
  • Mortal Kombat (Xbox360)
  • Portal 2 (Xbox360) – but I’d love to go back and complete the coop sometime…
  • Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (Xbox360)

There’s one pretty glaring trend: all of the games completed this year were for Xbox360. I pretty much didn’t touch my Nintendo DS, and only started playing Wii again in November, once I realized I might get the new Legend of Zelda game for Christmas.

I’ve actually been spending a lot of time reading books. Most recently, I read a book called “All Your Base Are Belong to Us,” which was a compilation of stories outlining the history of video games. It was a pretty fun book and helped me fill in a few gaps in knowledge of the history.

Anyway, I hope to get through the backlog a bit more in 2012, but I’m sure new games are going to come out and start sucking up my time. I’d love to hear your thoughts on any games that I may have missed in 2011. (I don’t own PS3, so please no PS3 recommendations)

Man, I am really behind on video games (which is alright because good quality video games don’t need to be the latest and greatest). I never got a Wii. I’m not sure what’s wrong with me. My DS is collecting dust. I’ve been so damn busy I just haven’t had time. The last Zelda game I played was Wind Waker (which I have managed to play numerous times). I’m sure the newer Zelda games will wait for me to eventually catch up and they’ll still be awesome…because they’re Zelda.
