Juniors – Albany, NY (Part 1)

Prior to the All Over Albany 3rd Birthday Party at The Point in Albany, I thought it would be a good idea to make a quick stop at Juniors (right next door) for some wings, if for no other reason than to keep me away from destroying a table full of cupcakes.

I used to patronize Mahar’s every Thursday night, and have walked past Juniors tons of times, but I never have actually eaten there. Ever since I’ve been following Trina (@starryblonde21) on twitter, my curiosity in trying their wings has been very high, since she checks in there on foursquare, which updates to her twitter feed, all the time!

I’ve been hearing about something called “Moonshine Wings,” and that term has intrigued me. Apparently, Cassie used to work for Juniors and told me that what was in the Moonshine Wings was a secret (duh, moonshine). We were going to see how secret it was…

We actually parked in a lot behind the restaurant at around 5:10pm. Luckily, it was a Wednesday evening because the spaces were labeled fair game after 5pm on Mon-Wed and after 7pm on Thurs-Fri. Phew!

Walking in the back was a bit odd. The place is a bar, and you walk past some dart boards and the bathroom before you reach the restaurant/bar area. Once you get into the main area, it’s pretty normal looking. There’s the bar and there are some private booths with Megatouch games to play as well as the dreaded half booth-half table where you get to hang out with strangers during busy hours.

When we went, there were a handful of people at the bar and just one other booth of people. We sat at a private booth.

I ordered two orders of wings, one hot, the other moonshine, both extra crispy (which I always specify when I order wings). The rest of the menu is your standard bar fare, and will be the subject of a later “derryX Dines” when I have some time to actually sit down and eat while hopefully socializing with some people.

Moonshine Wings
Hot Wings

I was certainly pleased with the texture of the wings. They arrived nice and crispy. I don’t really have much to say about the hot wings other than that they weren’t very hot. They were flavorful, but not anywhere near what I’d consider hot.

The moonshine wings were a different story. The moonshine sauce is a sweet and sticky sauce that thoroughly coats the wings. After taking one bite, I could figure out exactly what the base of the moonshine sauce is. I’ll refrain from revealing it here, because a google and yelp search for what constitutes moonshine sauce turns up nothing informative; I wouldn’t want to give away a long preserved secret. However, I will say that it’s not difficult to figure out; I’d even go as far as saying that you have problems if you can’t figure out at least what the base of the sauce is. I won’t say I know everything in there, but at least the major flavorings really stand out.

They were very good, and I think that further sampling of the menu is required. I will be back!

MORE derryX Dines!!!!!
